If you are interested in becoming more involved in Transition Whatcom consider becoming a member by joining our social networking (ning) site so you can connect with other members. And it's free!
The Ning Site
The Ning site provides a number of online activities that allow members to communicate and connect with the Transition Whatcom community. There are a variety of Discussion Groups (that share knowledge on specific Transition related topics or share a neighborhood connection) and Workgroups (that get together to take action within the community to increase local self-reliance and resilience). A short selection of some of these groups is given below:
Discussion Groups:
- Topic Oriented: The Chicken Club, GMO Awareness and Action, Natural Building Bellingham, Community Asks and Offers
- Neighborhood Oriented: Transition Southside, Transition Ferndale, Transition Columbia, Transition Goshen
Workgroups:
Alternative Energy, Personal Finance, Heart and Soul, Re-skilling, Food Security, Sustainable Transportation, Seed Savers.
In addition to discussion and working groups the ning site also hosts our Events list. Members can create events, sign-up to attend and discuss topics related to the event on the site. There is usually some event going on, just about every day, that is transition related. Events could be movies, re-skilling opportunities, neighborhood gatherings, calls for volunteers or a variety of other opportunities to work together, learn together and share your transition with others.
Members can also write their own Blogs to share their experiences and questions with the broader membership. A variety of online Resources, related to the Transition Town movement, are also available on the ning site. These can be a valuable tool for informing yourself and as was to help spread the word about Transition to your friends and acquaintances.
If this all sounds like something you are interested in, complete the easy-to-follow steps listed below to become a member:
- Read through these steps, and then click on the link that says 'Click here to join our online social network', which is at the bottom of this page
- This link will open in a new tab and will take you to the New Member Sign Up form at TransitionWhatcom.ning.com
- Complete the form by filling in your email address, a password of your choice, your birth date and the validation text
- Click the 'Sign Up' button
- A verification email will be sent to the email address that you entered
- Once you receive the verification email, click on the embedded link to validate that you received the message
- You will be directed to a web page on the Ning site that will allow you to fill out your membership profile information (These questions help us understand what your interests in Transition Whatcom are so that we can better support your interests)
- Fill in the answers to the profile questions and click the 'Join' button
- Your request will be forwarded to a Transmission Whatcom website administrator and will typically be reviewed in a day or two for approval
- While your membership is pending approval you can explore Transition Whatcom's Ning site to learn more about us and how to get involved
